THE PROBLEM
The achievement gap starts with the literacy gap. 80% of low-income fourth graders across the nation do not read at grade level.

OUR RESPONSE
Our Literacy Lab tutors work full-time at high-need schools, providing daily interventions to struggling readers age 3 - grade 3.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
Apply to join our team of passionate, prepared tutors, like Faye and Juan!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8M93us1ze4U

The Literacy Lab is currently seeking over 150 literacy tutors for the 2016-17 school year. As part of a nation-wide program called the Reading Corps, our literacy tutors provide daily, evidence-based interventions to students in preschool and grades K-3. Service areas include:

• Washington, DC
• Alexandria, VA
• Baltimore, MD
• Kansas City, MO

THE COMMITMENT
Tutors will serve full-time (Monday through Friday) at a high-need preschool or elementary school for an 11-month term, August 2016 through June/July 2017 (exact dates vary slightly by city). Tutors serve at least 40-45 hours weekly.

Our Pre-K tutors work closely with a lead teacher and a teacher's assistant in a single classroom for the entire school year. They lead structured whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one interventions. Throughout the day, Pre-K tutors also embed essential skills into classroom rituals. These include literacy-rich transition activities (EX: singing rhyming songs) and affirming, vocabulary-rich verbal communication.

Our K-3 grade tutors serve at one school for the entire year and have the opportunity to support several teachers. Each day, they tutor the same 15-20 students in a one-on-one setting using 10 structured, scripted early literacy interventions that complement and support what's already being taught in the classroom.

BENEFITS OF SERVICE
Training and Coaching:
Tutors are supported by a rigorous, multi-tiered coaching structure, which includes school-based supervisors and literacy experts. The service term begins with an intensive week-long Training Institute. Throughout the year, ongoing trainings build additional literacy strategies. Additional professional development is provided on broad transferrable skills like data-based decision-making, collaboration, problem-solving, etc.

Mission-driven Professional Network:
Our tutors are part of the national AmeriCorps network of service-minded individuals who dedicate a year of their professional lives to responding to community needs. We are looking for applicants who are deeply committed to closing the literacy gap and empowering the school community. In return, our literacy tutors gain real-world experience, building transferrable skills like data-based decision-making, collaboration, problem-solving, etc. while learning about research-based literacy instruction.

Compensation:
In return for their service, tutors receive:
• A modest living stipend, twice monthly
• An education award
• Basic health coverage

Additionally, tutors may be eligible for childcare assistance and/or SNAP benefits (based on income).
